This was an outstanding novel. It was very well written, with few grammatical errors, and misplaced/missing words, which is very important to me. The descriptions of people and places were excellent. I enjoyed the novel, but the conditions under which the children lived and the horrible abuse was hard to read. I'm not much younger than these children, and I was raised, as a poor white child, in rural Virginia. I'm familiar with lack of plumbing and the "path to the bath". Therefore, the descriptions of living conditions and the things the children did to entertain themselves and assist their families sounded authentic. Also, I appreciated that the author did not use the N-word. It was used a great deal in that time and place, but it was just as ugly and demeaning then as it is now. I sincerely recommend this book to anyone who remembers those years between the depression and WW 2 and those who just want to visualize what life was like for poor people in the south during that time. It will make you grateful for what you have.
It seems that stories about “po’ white trash†have become popular again. I grew up in rural south central Mississippi about a decade after the time of this story and can easily relate to many of the settings, the tenant farmer, lack of electricity, outdoor privy, and barefoot kids. It all rings true. I do have issues with the dialog. No one in my rural South ever pronounced a g in a word ending in ing. Something would always come out more like sump’n.Although this novel can be framed as a coming of age story, to me it is more a story about abusive relationships, both violent and sexual. This is a very powerful story about such relationships at the edge of society. However, as we know from recent events, such relationships are not limited to any region or economic group. Ultimately, this is about survival, in which character overcomes circumstance, redemption without religion, a very unsouthern idea.
This sounded like it would be very interesting, I love a southern setting and the 30's time period. Everything was fine going into the book, but as it went along the story line, the writing, just seemed to disintegrate! I went ahead and finished but I was overall disappointed. The story just didn't have any depth. I would not recommend.
I thought it interesting the division of chore. The mom did the majority of housework while the daughter slept in!? The boys hoed the fields while the dad rode a horse to check on them. The dad whipped the middle boy for being excited to go to lunch. I understand that most farm kids worked in the field, but usually next to their parents...I loved most of the characters while hating others. I liked how the neighbors took care of the children, when they could.I very much liked 16 year old Roger confronting his dad.I cheered, cried, laughed, and was outraged. I stopped to eat dinner and finished at 3am.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters were realistic and so was the story line. At times, it was difficult to put down because I wanted to see what was going to happen next. Each chapter left me wanting to get right into the next one. I love when a writer expresses things in such a way that you can feel, taste and smell as though the characters have come alive in your mind and awakening all of your senses. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a great story and a page-turning plot! Linda Medley
My wife turned me onto Hardscrabble Road. We both not only enjoyed treading it-we had a great time talking about it. We both loved the way that the characters were developed. I could almost feel the cold in my own feet and hear the shots. And the belt.Hardscrabble Road is definitely one of the better books that I've read lately.The book starts off quick and stays interesting all the way through.You really want to read this book.
This is one of the best books I've ever read...and I'm an avid reader. The character development is exceptional. It's description of life for a child in a.family with a volatile parent can relate to this story whether they lived in a poor rural family in the 30's or 40's or in the suburbs in New York during the 50's or 90's. This book is emotional and yet intelligent. I highly recommend this book .
I can't believe this is fiction! It's told with such feeling and honesty it's as though the narrator were beside me relating his life story! I wish my parents were here to read it because SO much echoes their lives growing up in the depression. KUDOS Mr. Weinstein, and THANK YOU! Can't wait to read your other books.
